En 2011, ils créent l’atelier d’architecture Tolila+Gilliland autour de la volonté commune de concevoir des projets, de les accompagner au bout de leur réalisation en explorant le maximum de voies, et en repoussant les limites déjà atteintes. En 2012, leur travail a été récompensé par le prix d’Architecture du Moniteur pour la Première Oeuvre. L’atelier travaille aujourd’hui sur des projets d’architecture aux programmes variés (logements, bureaux, équipements publics…) avec un souci particulier pour l’intégration du projet dans son contexte historique, géographique et environnementale. L’atelier d’architecture Tolila+Gilliland est primé en 2014 par le Centre européen d’architecture, d’art, de design et d’urbanisme et le Chicago Athenaeum, musée international d’architecture et de design, parmi les 40 architectes de moins de 40 ans en Europe (EUROPE 40 UNDER 40) qui « influenceront l’avenir proche de l’architecture européenne, tant dans sa théorie que dans sa pratique ».
Gaston Tolila and Nicholas Gilliland began working together in 2003 through a humanitarian architecture competition for which they were laureates. This nomadic dispensary project was then exhibited at the Pompidou Center in Paris in 2005. Since, they have continued to collaborate on architecture, urbanism and design projects, using their knowledge of public and private work acquired in renowned international architecture offices. In 2011, they created the Tolila+Gilliland atelier d’architecture. In 2012, their work received the “Prix d’Architecture du Moniteur 2012 pour la première oeuvre”. (French National prize for the first built work). Today, the atelier develops a broad range of architecture programs (housing, public works, offices...) with a particular attention to integration of each project into its own historic, geographic and environmental context. The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies and The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design announced that the architectural office Tolila+Gilliland is part of the selection of this year’s most promising and emerging design talent in Europe for 2014. Forty architects and landscape architects and industrial designers were selected this year by a jury of architecture and design practitioners from The European Centre's International Advisory Committee composed of some of Europe and the United States' most prestigious architecture and industrial design offices.
